CLUB/GROUP CONNECTIONS

Harrison Music Boosters Fundraiser:

Online Searching and Shopping. Go to www.goodsearch.com and put in Harrison High School Music Boosters under the charity (this is the second box with “verify” as the action). Then use this for your search engine (powered by Yahoo). Spread the word and ask others to use it. The more it’s used, the more we make. Please use it as you would other search engines. Fraudulent use can cause the Music Boosters to be removed from the site.
If you are doing online shopping, use www.goodshop.com and we can get money as well. This is a great and easy way to fundraise where we can't lose. You don't have to ask people to buy anything.....just ask your friends, family and co-workers to use a different way to search & shop!!!!! Any questions? Contact Amy Eston hhsmbfundraising@yahoo.com

HHS BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS OF AMERICA

Harrison now has a Business Professionals of America chapter.

Business Professionals of America is the leading CTSO (Career Technical Student Organization) for students pursuing careers in business management, office administration, information technology and other related career fields.  BPA has more than 51,000 members in over 2,300 chapters in 23 states.

Harrison BPA members compete in both team and individual events at regional, state, and national competitions against other member schools

Harrison’s BPA website design team members are J. Gaines, S. Coleman, and W. Price.  They have all taken web design courses at HHS.

The web design team has completed and submitted a website to represent Harrison at the Regional Leadership Conference in January.

Their task was to complete a website promoting the 2011 BPA National Leadership Conference that will be held in Washington DC.   The students had over 11 pages of requirements and standards to meet when designing and developing this website.  If their website wins at the regional competition they will move on to the state level.

Here is a link to their website:http://www.farmingtonhillsharrisonbpa.org

INTERNATIONAL CLUB

kids1kids2kids3

HHS announces a club designed to give additional support to students who are new to America and whose first language is not English. The mission of the International Club is to help these students become comfortable with school surroundings, foster friendships while practicing English in a safe environment, and learn how they can become a contributing member of their community.
Through monthly activities, the International Club will provide information about:

  • school traditions and facilities
  • school activities and clubs
  • the various cultures and languages represented at HHS
  • Farmington Hills and Michigan
  • college requirements and admission procedures
  • resources for extra help

Advisor: Roxanne Mecham & Rania Attisha     Co-advisors: Rola Masri, Rashmi Wadehra, and Frank Ivezaj
Native English-speaking students who are interested in languages and cultures are invited to join.  Please visit the Bilingual Room, room 301, or pick up a registration form in the main office.  We look forward to meeting you!

WHY LEARN A SECOND LANGUAGE?

Learn about another culture! Get ahead! get a better job! The world is full of languages. Think about how many newspapers and books you could read, movies and TV shows you could understand, web sites you could visit, people and places you could really get to know with another language!

Did you know that studying a second language can improve your skills and grades in Math and English and can improve entrance exam scores- SAT's, ACT's, GRE's, MCAT's, and LSAT's? Research has shown that math and verbal SAT scores climb higher with each additional year of language study. And three years of language study on your record will catch the eye of anyone reading your job, college, or graduate school application.

Connect with other cultures. Knowledge of other cultures will help you expand your personal horizons and become a responsible citizen. Your ability to talk to others and gather information beyond the world of English will contribute to your community and your country. Remember, at HHS we offer classes in French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. Come join us!

Change Your Life, Change Your World:
YFU Is Seeking Prospective Exchange Students and Host Families

Adventurous high school students looking for the learning adventure of a lifetime are encouraged to consider becoming a Youth For Understanding exchange student.  Over 100 programs are offered to 40 countries including summer, semester, school year or 13th year abroad options.  YFU’s website www.yfu-usa.org details information on programs.  Alternatively, students and families can call the Admissions Office at 1-800-TEENAGE.

Students between 15 and 18 are eligible for most of the programs.  Hundreds of scholarships are available, most with deadlines in early January.  A key benefit of YFU programs is that YFU students live with FAMILIES, and as a result, they have supervision, caring, love, advice, and the chance to form a lifelong relationship and to be totally accepted in a local community.  The YFU high school study abroad experience also tends to be far less expensive than a college experience.

Youth for Understanding USA is also looking for some local host families to host high school exchange students for the next semester or school year.  Host families provide a place to live and three meals a day plus the encouragement, advice and love to help their new family member through a semester or year in a new home.   The students bring their own spending money and good health insurance plus the willingness to be a good family member, following family rules and helping out with family responsibilities.  YFU provides local representatives who support the students and families to make sure it’s a good experience for all involved.

Call the local Field Director for more information about becoming an exchange student or to see if hosting might be right for you and your family.  You can read blogs of area students who have gone on program.  You can request profiles of inbound students with interests similar to your own.  Contact Barb Kilkka at 248-932-0811.  Or e-mail at Kilkka@yfu.org
