Mission Statement
The Farmington/Farmington Hills Multicultural Multiracial Community Council recognizes that all people are integral to the community's health, harmony and successful future. We explore and celebrate our differences and embrace our commonalities.
History
Since 1990, a Steering Committee composed of representatives from Farmington Public Schools including administrators and students, Farmington and Farmington Hills city governments, Oakland Community College, local clergy, Farmington Community Libraries, the YMCA, Chamber of Commerce, local businesses and concerned citizens meets monthly to discuss multicultural and multiracial issues.
In 1993, the Multicultural/Multiracial (MCMR) Council sponsored its first diversity community forum. Since then, the Council has worked toward providing programs that reach out to our citizens and offer opportunities for community-wide exchange.
After several years of conducting these forums, it was evident that the community was looking to describe what the mission statement meant in practical terms. During the 1996-97 program year, the Council held workshops and focus meetings with numerous and varied groups throughout Farmington and Farmington Hills to develop the "Guiding Principles for Maintaining a Healthy, Diverse Community." The Farmington and Farmington Hills City Councils and Farmington Public Schools Board of Education unanimously adopted resolutions in 1997 to support these Guiding Principles.
Since the Principles were adopted, the Council has created and begun implementing action plans to support these Guidelines.
Guiding Principles
- We believe that all members of the human family should be respected and their rights supported including those encompassing factors such as, but not limited to, race, religion, culture, ethnicity, economic status, gender, age, disability and sexual orientation.
- We believe the face of our community should be reflected in all segments of our community life.
- We believe that healthy communities maintain a comprehensive and balanced menu of public and private services which are inclusive of and accessible to all citizens.
- We believe in equal educational opportunities.
- We believe in equal employment opportunities.
- We believe in equal access to housing.
- We believe in equally safe neighborhoods.
